Advanced from day one.

Engineer Théodore Lebens designed the building as Antwerp’s Provincial Archive. Its complete cast-iron support structure was among Europe’s early examples and created open floors without heavy internal load-bearing walls.

Fire safety was essential for thousands of irreplaceable documents. The original columns, beams, vaults and spiral staircase are still visible—and still carry the building.

Where records once filled the shelves, bottles from across the world are collected today. The purpose changed; the idea of preserving and discovering remained.
