Primitivo

Primitivo

Primitivo ripens early in Puglia and produces deeply coloured, full-bodied reds with ripe blackberry, dried fruit and generous alcohol; fresher examples retain a savoury, spicy line.

A visual taste profile.

These scales describe a representative dry expression. Climate, harvest date, yields and winemaking can move an individual wine in another direction.

Where it grows

From origin to the wider vineyard.

The first country is the grape’s principal reference point; the remaining countries show important established cultivation rather than a complete planting census.

Three useful expressions

01

Fresh & fruit-led

Juicy fruit, moderate extraction and little oak emphasise immediate pleasure.

02

Classic regional style

The grape’s familiar balance of fruit, structure, spice and place.

03

Structured & age-worthy

How we recognise this grape

With Primitivo we look for deep colour, ripe blackberry, plum jam or dried fruit and a broad, warming body. The acidity is usually moderate and the tannin ripe rather than severe. Zinfandel is the obvious blind-tasting confusion because it is genetically the same variety; origin and style, not a single aroma, are what separate the labels in the glass.

This is a practical tasting cue from our Wineflight experience, not a fixed recipe: origin, ripeness and winemaking can shift the profile.
